Distinguished and Famous people from Goulburn

🎬 George Lazenby

Goulburn-born George Lazenby entered international film history as James Bond in On Her Majesty’s Secret Service in 1969. His earlier career had included modelling, and the Bond role placed him abruptly at the centre of a major film franchise. He appeared as 007 only once in the main series, making his association with the character both brief and enduring. His official biography records Goulburn as his birthplace in 1939. The city’s connection is the beginning of his life, before the modelling assignments and screen career overseas.

🏏 Bill O’Reilly

Bill O’Reilly travelled by train to Goulburn High School for two years before boarding at St Patrick’s College for another three. Teacher training and country appointments followed, alongside the development of a remarkable cricket career. His spin bowling challenged leading international batsmen, and he later became a forceful newspaper commentator on the game. The Goulburn connection is substantial schooling rather than a passing visit. Before the nickname “Tiger” became familiar to cricket crowds, there were train journeys, lessons and the practical task of completing an education away from the family home.

⛪ Kenneth Clements

Kenneth Clements served as Goulburn’s diocesan registrar and archdeacon from 1946 to 1950 and became coadjutor bishop in 1949. The administrative work was part of a ministry already shaped by country parishes. After serving as bishop of Grafton, he returned as bishop of Canberra and Goulburn in 1961, balancing a fast-growing capital with a largely rural diocese. He encouraged openness to learning and cooperation across church boundaries. Goulburn’s association rests on named offices and sustained responsibilities, giving the city a direct place in the career of a church leader whose work often happened through patient organisation and negotiation.
